Rolls-Royce – not only cars
Rolls-Royce is a brand that is usually associated with luxury cars. In 1998 the right to manufacture vehicles under this name was acquired by Volkswagen and since 2003 it has belonged to BMW. The prestigious ‘Rolls-Royce’ trademark is active in many industry branches keeping its highest standards of products and services. Currently Rolls-Royce is a leading developer and supplier of propulsion equipment used in many fields of the industry, e.g. in the energy sector. It is the world’s second-largest producer of aircraft engines. It is also well known for marine products such as: engines, bearings, seals, gears, and propulsors. It designs and produces manoeuvring, automation, control and electrical power systems for ships, also deck machinery solutions, synchronized ship lifting systems and ship transfer systems.
Gdynia as investment location for new plant of Rolls-Royce
Rolls-Royce Marine Poland is a part of the Rolls-Royce activity in the maritime industry. In 2011 a modern Rolls-Royce Marine Service Workshop was built in Gdynia (Poland, north of Gdansk). The task for this Workshop is to service a wide range of Rolls-Royce equipment and supply new products to neighbouring countries. It is not by accident that Gdynia, located on the Baltic coast, has been chosen as a place of investment, as it has won the ranking of the most attractive cities for business investments according to the Forbes magazine (in the category of 150,000 to 300,000 citizens).
In Gdynia Rolls-Royce had rented a coastal area of 6,700 m² for 30 years and placed their service workshop measuring 2,000 m² there. The value of the investment is estimated at 5 million EURO. The internal transport assuring material flow in the workshop was planned in detail and entrusted to ABUS devices erected by ABUS Crane Systems Polska (www.abuscranes.pl), the Polish daughter company of the German crane manufacturer ABUS Kransysteme GmbH.
The ABUS material handling solution
The Rolls-Royce Marine Service Workshop has been supplied with two overhead cranes and one free standing pillar jib crane. Heavy tasks are performed by a double girder ZLK travelling crane with a span of 18.2 m. There are two electric wire rope hoists working on that crane. The one with a load capacity of 30 tons is supported by the second with 15 tons load capacity. The hoists are controlled by a tandem radio remote control system and are equipped with LED indicators displaying the weight of the current load. Crane travelling and trolley travelling are controlled by frequency converters allowing sensitive movement with adjustable acceleration. The main ZLK crane is accompanied by a single girder ELV crane with a span of 5 m erected on a separate free standing steel structure. An electric chain hoist GM6 with a load capacity of 2 tons is working on that crane.
The trio of ABUS devices is completed by a pillar jib crane type VS with a jib length of 5 m and a load capacity of 3.2 tons. The rated slewing range of the jib-crane is n x 360˚ (infinite rotation in both directions).
The modern Rolls-Royce Marine Service Workshop employs dozens of highly qualified engineers from the maritime industry and is aiming to cooperate with many counterparties in Poland and in countries bordering the Baltic Sea.
